In 2023, one of our co-founders came home to find a stranger inside her house. He had been hired through a referral — the kind every family in the country relies on. A friend's friend. A glowing word-of-mouth recommendation. No paperwork, no checks, no signed record of who he was.
She wasn't hurt. The story repeats, in less lucky form, in tens of thousands of South African homes every year. Hustla exists to change the shape of that story — by making verification the default, and a glowing reference the supporting evidence.
Hustla is operated by a team of fourteen — split between Johannesburg, Cape Town and Germany. We are not a marketplace, a job board, or a referral network. We are a verification publisher, with a platform attached.
We started Hustla because the existing options were all variations of the same shrug. Classified ads. WhatsApp forwards. Agency rosters that vanish the day a placement breaks. None of them carried the weight of a verified, signed record — the kind that an employer could rely on, and a worker could carry with them.
Our work is narrow on purpose. We don't set wages, we don't mediate disputes, we don't take a cut of the relationship. We run five independent checks, package them into a signed file, and put that file in the hands of the person it belongs to. The rest — the interview, the chemistry, the trust — is between the two of you.
We answer to PSiRA, to POPIA, and to anyone whose name appears in our records. Our verification framework is public, audited quarterly, and published in full here.
